Wild Rose (Rosa nutkana) is as striking to see and to smell as it is well defended. Its needle-sharp thorns are the reason deer and elk leave it alone, and the reason harvesters still work in leather gloves.
Wild Rose carries a long record of traditional use among the Native peoples of the Pacific Northwest, who prepared the flowers as a tea for chest colds, coughs, menstrual irregularity, diarrhea, labor pains and stomach pain, as an eye wash, and as a wash to strengthen babies.
In 1995 the University of British Columbia published a study titled Antiviral Screening of British Columbian Medicinal Plants, in which 100 plant extracts were screened in the laboratory against seven viruses. Ninety-six of the plants examined were ones used medicinally by British Columbian Native peoples, Rosa nutkana among them.
